1948 Indian Chief - Restored
You are looking at a restored 1948 Indian Chief. Asking $25,000. The bike is in running condition although it has not run for a couple of years, so you'll need to verify the engine's operation. The bike has 0 miles since restoration. The engine was built by Jake Junker (Indian Motorcycle News) many years ago. The engine's appearance is excellent - every fin on both cylinders is perfect.
This bike was my first Indian project - as received it was a literal basket case. I originally received it as a frame and three boxes of (mostly) Indian parts. It has been restored to its current condition over many years with lots professional help from a number of Indian experts, including the team at Starklite.
The bike does not have a title - I will sell it to you with a bill of sale, and include the bill of sale which I received when I bought it as engine cases and a bunch of mismatched parts.
Appearance-wise the bike is beautiful - it's Seafoam Blue, an original 1948 color - painted by Randy Zorn (Indian Motorcycle Restorations Ltd). Mr. Zorn also did the bike's final assembly. Currently it's sporting a solo seat, a Chummy seat is included. I think I have nearly all the hardware for the Chummy seat spring set, and the passenger floorboard extensions are already installed.
Wheels and hubs are assembled as original. Drum brakes are set up as original. Tires are reproduction, and the tubes are holding air. Rebuilt original speedometer. Reproduction dash. It needs a battery which I will supply when you purchase the bike. I have the hard rubber battery box to contain a modern battery, and make it look like an original battery, circa 1948.
Although the bike has many original parts, but there are a fair number of reproduction parts on the bike. Mechanically, the bike is stock, except it was converted to 12 volt electrics. The generator was rebuilt for 12V and all the lights, horn, ignition, etc are 12V. Set up with left hand shift, left hand spark advance, right hand throttle.
There are only a few missing items that would make this bike look like it's right off the showroom floor. The toolbox - which I have and it's painted but it's not installed. I don't have the crash bars.
The bike comes with all the manuals, books, magazines, and documentation I have accumulated over time (including all the receipts I can find).
For the disclaimer - the bike is beautiful, it's obviously "as is" - it needs to be thoroughly checked out by Indian super-experts (like the Starklite team) before putting it on the road - it's 67 years old and even if it was in perfect condition I would never consider riding it on a highway at today's speeds.
Currently I cannot transport the bike, so the buyer will have to arrange to pick it up at my home at the New Jersey Shore. Perhaps shipping can be arranged. "As-is where-is."
